Examples of changes to schools of the 21st century that we advocate are: 1) building outdoor learning spaces; 2) creating communal spaces; and 3) intersecting sections of the building around a “gravity center” like a gallery space, covered patio, open courtyard, or dining halls (Heitor, 2005, p.47). In the learning environment we support design elements that place technology at the forefront of the learning space and 1) accommodate ‘expert’ instructors; 2) provide for experiential/authentic learning opportunities; 3) integrate teachers’ workspaces within the learning environment; and 4) create learning centers that incorporate soft seating, enclaves, acoustical boundaries, flexible furniture, and project spaces (Open Architecture Network, 2009).
